Why grammar correction does not flag you
To understand where the line is, you need to know what the detector measures.
Turnitin's AI indicator, like every tool in this category, reads statistical properties of your prose. Two matter most. Perplexity captures how predictable each word is given the words before it. Burstiness captures how much sentence length and complexity vary across the document. Machine-generated text tends to be predictable and uniform. Human writing is less predictable and lumpier. Now think about what a spelling fix does to those numbers. Changing "recieve" to "receive" alters one token. Adding a missing comma alters punctuation. Correcting "the data shows" to "the data show" swaps a verb form.
None of that changes which ideas you chose, how you ordered your argument, how long your sentences run, or how much your rhythm varies. The statistical shape of the document is the shape you gave it. The corrections sit on top.
That is the mechanical reason classic Grammarly is safe, and it is a better reason than any vendor reassurance.
Where the line actually is
Grammarly is not one tool any more, which is the source of nearly all the confusion. Its own AI detector page sits alongside a set of generative writing features, and the company sells both.
Here is the practical split.
Safe: correction. Spelling, grammar, punctuation, basic clarity suggestions that swap a word or tighten a phrase you wrote. Your sentence structure survives. Your voice survives.
Risky: generation. Drafting a paragraph from a prompt, "rewrite this to sound more academic", tone rewrites that reconstruct whole sentences, expanding a bullet into prose. The output is model-generated text, and a detector reading it will read it as model-generated text, because it is.

Turnitin is two checks, not one
Worth separating, because students conflate them and then panic at the wrong number.
The similarity report compares your submission against Turnitin's archive of student papers, journals and web pages, and reports overlapping passages. It is the original product and has nothing to do with AI.
The AI writing indicator estimates what proportion of the document appears machine-generated. It is newer and it is the one people mean.
These produce independent numbers. A paper can score 3% similarity and 70% AI, or the reverse. Grammarly corrections affect neither meaningfully. Generative rewriting affects the second, and can affect the first too, because models produce statistically likely phrasing and statistically likely phrasing already exists in the archive.

The risk running the other way
Most coverage assumes you are worried about being caught. There is a larger group with the opposite problem: students whose entirely original work gets flagged.
This is well documented. Stanford-led research in Liang et al., 2023 tested detectors against essays by native and non-native English writers. Native-speaker essays were classified accurately. Essays by non-native writers were misclassified as AI-generated at dramatically higher rates, because a careful, restricted vocabulary and even sentence rhythm read as machine-like to a classifier.
Institutions have acted on it. Vanderbilt disabled Turnitin's AI detector and published its reasoning, and that statement is worth reading whichever side of this you are on. The argument was that even a low stated false-positive rate, applied across a university's annual submission volume, produces enough wrongly flagged students to do real harm, and that the tool could not show enough of its working for a student to mount a defence.
More than 50 institutions worldwide have since reached similar conclusions.
There is a bitter irony here for non-native speakers. Grammarly is most useful to exactly the students most likely to be falsely flagged, and using it to polish grammar does not raise that risk. The tool that helps them is not the problem. The detector is.
What to do before you submit
Three things, none of which involve avoiding Grammarly.
Check your institution's policy. Most 2026 syllabi now carry an explicit AI clause, and many distinguish assistive tools from generative ones by name. That document is the rule, not a blog post.
Keep your drafting history. Write in Google Docs or Word with version history on. A timestamped trail showing an essay built over weeks is the single most effective response to a false accusation, and it is the one thing that cannot be reconstructed afterwards.

The disclosure question is the real one
Step back from the detector for a moment, because the mechanical answer above is only half of what people are actually asking.
Most students worrying about this are not trying to cheat. They are trying to work out whether a tool they have used for years has quietly become a rule violation. That is a fair thing to be confused about, because the tools changed underneath everyone. Grammarly in 2019 was a spellchecker. So the useful framing is not "is this allowed" but "what would I be comfortable explaining".
If your instructor asked how you produced a given paragraph, "I wrote it and Grammarly caught two comma errors" is an easy answer. "I gave Grammarly a bullet point and it produced the paragraph" is a harder one, and if your institution prohibits generated prose, it is the wrong one regardless of what any detector reports.
That test has a useful property: it does not depend on whether you get caught. Detectors change, thresholds move, and institutions switch tools. What does not change is whether you can account for your own work.
Two practical notes follow from it.
Turn off the generative suggestions when you are writing something with an integrity requirement attached. Most tools let you separate correction from generation in settings, and doing it once removes the whole category of accidental violation.
